View Full Version : Injuries, what's happened to you?
Skiing is classed as a dangerous or extreme sport with the insurance agencies, and thankfully I've never had anything worse than a twisted ankle or a few scraps from going through a tree line or two. So I'm wondering what's the worst thing you've seen (or caused).
I remember when I was in Solden once, when I was learning to ski, I crashed into this cute girl who really annoyed and serious after I ploughed into her and ended up getting tangled. But nothing was hurt, well I wasn't anyway ;) I've also seen people being airlifted off the piste once. There was a bump in the slope, where it crossed a road and someone lost control going over the bump and it looked liked they had messed up their legs. The rescue team had come and covered him with a blanket when I passed, and when I got to the bottom of the slope I saw the helicopter come in and land.

A friend of mine broke his elbow, he was doing some advanced class learning how to go through trees. This year I've heard that they have been much more accidents because of the bad conditions in Europe and the higher likely hood of getting ice.
Nothing has happened to me (touch wood) :D

I snapped in half my achilles about 4-5 years ago . Very odd feeling...your brain says your foot is hanging down at 45 degrees and its flat on the floor. Eeeek. Anyway I went and saw a great doc in Dublin and he gave me the once over and I was back skiing the following year ! As you all know , insurace is very important !

I did my ACL 4 years ago and now I am willing to try skiing again. Fingers and toes crossed for me !
I hope you have an injury free season tomas, coming back from injury can be tough.
What ski insurance do you use xcountry ? I've used VHI for the times I went and the E111 card on the back of the PAYE card.
up to much

I never injured myself skiing per se, rather it's all being aprés ski, when I've done stupid stuff, like doing jumps out off my 1st floor apartment balcony. ;)
Normally you see dangerous accidents either when the people aren't that advanced for skiing, and there are alot of inexperienced people on the slopes. Or when it's icy. Normally I stay well clear of resorts that they that they are very suitable for beginners. While I am not a pro quite yet, I prefer to avoid bad skiers (like myself)!

HA , it's great to read these.
The first day I went skiing in France, I managed to get concussed. I was on the baby slopes and went a bit too close to the car park at the end of the day. I crashed into the side of a van and hit my head. I was so embarrassed and I needed an extra day to muster the courage to make me go back to the ski school. :D

ouch that looks nasty off-piste, what happened to you ?
I thank my lucky skis that I am still healthy. The worst think that ever happened to me was I fell off ski lift, but it was right at the end so I didn't fall that much.

This one is about my brother . It was the first day we went out skiing in a long time, and my brother was warming up on a green. It was a harder green, almost a blue I'd say. But still nothing that special.
I went down before him so I didn't know what was going on.When I stopped and turned around to wait for him and I see him on the ground laying there. He was kinda flapping his arms a little. When I got there he said he was in serious pain. We called the ski patrol and they snow mobiled him off the mountain into first aid, he ended up TWISTING HIS ANKLE. Dont ask me how..he just did. All of that for a twisted ankle.

I don't like to dwell on skiing injuries, as the more afraid you are the more likely you are to get injured. Have you ever seen the kids on the slopes. They zoom down, with absolutely no fear. I think that is an important part of it. You must have "no fear".
Off-piste : do you have much of a scare now ? I also see that you had other older ones on your knee already.

Wow ! I've only had a few cuts and bruises from some random trees. And when I was learning I had a sore bum for 3 weeks after my first holiday. I think the the majority of skiing injuries are caused by people not knowing their limits. For skiers and snowboarders it seems that people like to go too fast IMHO. Also those people who do tricks or off piste activities are more likely to get hurt.
Of course there are two other types of skiing injuries. 1 being people who ski drunk, yes I've known a few who like to live dangerously. 2 you can't protect yourself from other skiers, like someone crashing into you. My friend clara was hit by someone on her 2nd morning of her skiing holiday, and had to spend the rest of the time with her leg in a cast !
Skiing injuries happen to thousands of people every year, but you can also take a lot of precautions to make sure that you are less likely to be one of these statistics.

not wanting to frighten people, but a mate of mine knew Tara Flynn, an Irish girl from Clare, aged 22, who got hit by a snow plough in the US this year. She was in a coma. It is understood Tara was walking in a ski village when she was struck by the snow plough last Friday. She suffered a broken leg and went into a coma. News article (http://www.independent.ie/national-news/holiday-skier-tara-in-coma-after-snow-plough-collision-1267683.html)
I couldn't find any more information about the girl. It would be interesting to hear what happened.

Broke my leg just above ankle last (small crack) year hurt like hell but thought only pulled something skied on for a bit and managed to get down the mountain and took some liquid anesthetic (the type you get by the pint). Leg like ballon next day (Saturday) hobbled off to on site clinic x-rayed, plastered up and dispatched within 1 hour. Great trip home esp. through Airport no que's when your in a wheelchair.

oh dear, did you have to get air lifted off the mountain ? I always wanted to know how much it would cost.
