I'm a bit curious about http://www.skiclub.ie/ , the dry slope in Kilternan, Co.Dublin. I'm just wondering what is it like to ski on it. It's not really that close to me, and I don't own my own skis, so I am wondering how much would it work out of I wanted to say take a weekend and go up there and practise.

Cheers

It's not supposed to be that good. But if you really want to get practice then that's the best there is. I do know some people water ski and they say that helps a little. But in Ireland there isn't really much other options to practise.

I think they charge about 30€ for 4 hours including rentals of gear. One tip I do know for these places is that you should have mittens, not gloves, as if you get your paws stuck in the hexagons you can really injure yourself.

good luck !

I think there are also some dry slopes in northern Ireland. Here , Silverwood near Lurgan http://www.craigavon.gov.uk/leisure/ski.asp

Living in Kerry I think water skiing would be the closest or wake boarding, but I've never done it. I don't think you really need to practise, and is it worth the money. I would prefer to save my money and stay 2 weeks instead of 1.

Next year I am planning on hitting Kitzhbuel and St. Anton, for a week each.

There are plenty of mountains in Kerry, but sadly no snow ! 1100m is the highest point in Ireland ffs :(

I've read that they aren't offering snowboarding on Sundays anymore, well at least for the summer that is. I never went but I would be interested in going at least once to try it out

I went once and almost killed myself, granted I wasn't so experienced, but those holes in the slopes are pretty frightening, They have the Dendix mesh material which can be quite dangerous. More about surfaces can be seen here : http://www.answers.com/topic/artificial-ski-slopes

I just check and I see that Kilternan is a little expensive. For an adult it's €30 for a 3 hour session. That's more than a real SKI PASS !

joy : I think the price includes equipment also. So once you factor these things in it's cheap enough.

I recently joined the ski club in Kilternan and I think its excellent value. The instructors are top class and you will be taught properly, regardless of your level. Its also very good for your off-season fitness, and the increased friction of the surface certainly helps build your leg and upper body muscles.
I was there this weekend and the slopes were frozen, which made for some really nice fast skiing :-) Oh and by the way, avoid falling if you can ;-)
Finally, the people that run it are really friendly and welcoming.

If the flu I have wouldn't be so bad I'd probably be there because I'm on sick call anyway :)

On snow the lift pass pays for the lift and grooming.

On plastic, it pays for the lift, the plastic matting (much more expensive than grooming snow) but also includes skis, boots and poles.

Also, there are 1000s of people visiting a big snow resort a day compared to tens visiting a plastic slope so the cost doesn't get spread around quite as well.

Lovely Wednesday evening in Kilternan ( yesterday ) - not too busy but not quiet aswell.
Met some lovely people there too...
Anyone care to join for some "plastic slope" fun next week ?
( I might bring my hip flask with me :) )
Raul.

Was there myself last Wednesday....slope covered in ice, which was great. Friday night is also a great time to visit, its very quite. Avoid Tuesday's the boarders are usually out in force :)
And yes there are some really nice people there, and always willing to offer good advice.
