View Full Version : Drinking while skiing
You see this in most of the resorts (in Europe anyway) where they sell alcohol at lunch time. So you get up early, do your lessons, have a few beers / wine with your instructor over lunch and then you go back to the slopes to practise some more. But I think it's rather dangerous to drink while skiing.
Drinking will decrease your reaction time and probably also makes you more likely to take dangerous decisions.
Do you think they should allow alcohol on the slopes ? I've added a fancy poll yoke , hopefully it works.

Drinking is a great way to keep warm ! Just pull into the little restaurant on the slopes. Grab a shot or a mulled wine, knock it back and get back on the slopes with the warm feeling inside.
I usually wouldnt have any more than 8 beers on the mountain, it's simply far too dangerous.
Beer & mulled wine are a necessity to keep warm on the slopes. It's probably more dangerous not to drink ;)

I normally drink to numb the pain. After a few glasses of wine you don't feel your limbs aching. Skiing without alcohol is like a swimming pool without water.
Do you think they should allow alcohol on the slopes ?
I really hope they're not gonna ban it.(Would be hard to enforce it though :) - I've never skied without my flask ever - you never know when you get stuck off piste in minus 25 degree weather).
Even in the cartoons the resque dogs ( Saint Bernards ) carry a small container of rum to revive people who spend too much time in cold weather :)
Is not about if they should allow it or not, is about people who don't know when to stop drinking while on the slopes.

There's nothing like a few pints with your lunch.....drinking is all part of it.
This is quite interesting : BBC - Newsbeat - Health - Ski resorts warn: 'Watch your drinking' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/health/newsid_7322000/7322396.stm) from earlier this year. Chris said: "I just drink, drink, drink then snowboard as well. I had a few beers for lunch today. I was alright for a couple of hours until it hit meWhile ski marshals in Austria and Italy can breathalyse people they suspect are over the limit and apparently your insurance won't pay if you have alcohol consumed. Am I just being a wet blanket here ?

I think that news item just shows you, there are people who are physically drunk on the slopes, which is different to having one at lunch time or being merry. Like it said there are some folk who drink and drink and drink, and then head out onto the slopes.
I never thought of the insurance aspect tho

Imagine getting breathalised on the slopes. I can just picture it: Like they put a flashing light on their cap, and go down the slope chasing after you, cutting in in front of you and blocking you with their ski poles.

Drink early and often, that's my motto ! Obviously we take everything in moderation though.
When I was learning to ski I was too nervous to drink, but once I got a bit better both go hand in hand pretty well.
