Zell am See

This historic town of Zell am See dates back to the 13th century and has a decidedly traditional feel that the pedestrianized streets add to. The town has many attractions in both the Winter and Summer seasons so the tourist infrastructure is excellent and well established as are the lodgings available.

As with most Austrian ski resorts with luxury ski hotels, self catered and catered apartments, along with ski chalets for couples and groups are all available in the town or close by. The skiing is primarily in the Schmittenhöhe ski area above the town which has 77km of slopes but Zell am See is partnered with Kaprun under the Kitzsteinhorn mountain which means you get almost double the ski area for your lift pass including access to a glacier where you can ski 10 months of the year.

With so many pistes available there is something to suit skiers and snowboarders of any level and some free-riding and off piste for the experts. This ski resort is often considered a perfect location for families but it’s lively bars and restaurants ensure that groups of singles will also enjoy the resort.

Some of the town’s attractions and activities include

  • Great cross country skiing trails
  • Indoor pool and sauna
  • Vogt Tower, said to be over 1,000 years old.
  • Historical town walks
