Skiing Holiday in 2021
Skiing has become more and more popular for Irish people in the last 10 years. Now it is quite common for professionals to go on a skiing and a summer holiday. We at Skiing Dot IE aim to bring you some details and advice for Irish Skiers. Whether you are heading to the mountains for the first time or you are an avid skier,Skiing Dot IE will have something for you. We will be bring details of ski holiday options from the tour operators, as well as tips for what resorts will be hot in the 2021 season.
Where to Ski
That is the big question with people who are skiing for the first time. The main thing to remember here is that most resorts cater for all levels of skiers. All resorts offer ski schools, so you don’t have to worry about that point when picking a resort. When picking a resort you should look at the other aspects of the resort :
- Cost, there can be a big difference in costs for different ski resorts. The cost for a weekly ski pass/equipment rental, as well as accommodation costs varies from location to location.
- Transfer time/distance from the airport. With a young family, long transfer times from the airport to the resort should probably avoided if at all possible.
- Is Apré ski important for you ? Check the reports on the resorts and find out what the night life is like.
- How far will you have to travel each day to the slopes ?
Locations in Eastern Europe (Bulgaria/Czech Republic) are becoming more and more popular, but we would not recommend them for the novice skiers. Other countries like France (& Andora) and Austria are the most popular destinations for Irish Skiers, with Italy coming in a close third. Where ever you go I’m sure you will enjoy it !
Names of highly recommended resorts
Here is a run down of some resorts that we can recommend for your snow holiday. These are just 2 or 3 names of resorts in each country to get you started with locations to look at. They come highly recommended by ourself and from the members of our skiing forum.
Resorts like Val d’Isère, Méribel & Chamonix are very popular in France skiing resorts.
Skiing in Pal-Arinsal, Soldeu & Pas de la Casa are the main resorts in Andora.
If you are going to Italy then you should check out Livigno & Courmayeur, these come highly recommended.
US East-coast Skiing
5 hours from Dublin and you can be in Boston. Within a 3 hour drive drive there are tens of resorts to go. There are 91 resorts in New England (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut). They tend to be smaller than some of the European counterparts, here are some of the bigger ones
- In Vermont we love Okemo, Stowe and Killington.
- In New Hampshire check out Bretton Woods, Loon Mountain & Mount Sunapee.
- In Maine visit Sugarloaf, Sunday River or Big Squaw.
Note: The US resorts tend to be more expensive for day passes than in the EU.
Start looking early
The more diligent skiers, booked their holidays from September/October the previous year onwards, some people even before that, so get booking ! Many family groups go back to the same resort year after year, and will book their next years holiday at the end of the current one. It can be a good idea to find out what other chalets & hotels charge for accommodation. One final advantage of booking a year in advance is that you can generally get next years holiday at this years prices.
